TITLE:

Speech/Language Specialist

 

SUMMARY:

Plans, monitors and executes therapy according to the needs of individual students; implements treatment programs; documents and supports educational activities.

 

REPORTS TO:

Principal

 

DUTIES

  • Conducts ongoing informal assessments; interprets and analyzes data; provides written reports; Documents progress in a clear and concise manner.

 

  • Develops educationally relevant IEP goals and objectives in collaboration with teachers.

 

  • Develops, implements, monitors and revises therapy programs during individual and group treatment sessions.

 

  • Submits written reports to appropriate sources according to schedule utilizing required formats/forms and maintains all service related records.

 

  • Participates in department meetings, all staff meetings and team meetings and various school clinics.

 

  • Participates and/or cooperates in the aquatic and hippotherapy program (if applicable) by planning and/or scheduling therapeutic treatment individually/groups.  

 

  • Designs, fabricates, adjusts or makes minor repairs to therapeutic equipment for individual students; suggestions and monitors provision of appropriate assistive technology.

 

  • Oversees activities of Therapy Assistants, Therapy Aides or therapy students and cosigns all documentation according to discipline specific practice standards and licensing regulations.

 

  • Maintains open communication with family/guardian and child study team case manager as required on an individual basis.

 

  • Fosters and maintains collaborative relationship with teachers, classroom support staff, and resource staff while monitoring therapeutic programs.

 

  • Attends educational courses to maintain and update knowledge and skills; may conduct in-service programs for other staff members.

 

  • Travel and or home visits may be required to meet individual needs.

 

  • Performs other related tasks as directed by supervisor or PILLAR management.

 

 

  • Participates in yearly hearing screenings using school equipment; documents results; notifies families /guardians.

Demonstrated knowledge of and independence in the use of varied therapy treatment approaches; knowledge of normal child development

Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, establish and maintain proper working relationships with students, parents, co-workers and supervisors, perform strenuous physical activities, maintain a safe working environment, adhere to ethical standards of the profession, travel to various locations, adhere to personnel policies, procedures and standard health precautions

 

FLSA CLASSIFICATION/WORKING HOURS:

 

_____Exempt.  Employee is expected to work until all major projects and related tasks are completed to the satisfaction of their Program Director or Supervisor.  Some early morning, evening, and weekend work is expected.  Employees are paid a set weekly salary exceeding the federally required minimum and are not eligible to earn overtime compensation.

 

 ___x__ Non-Exempt.      Hourly.  Employee receives at least the minimum wage, is paid by the hour and is eligible to earn overtime compensation.

 

EXPOSURE CONTROL CLASSIFICATION:

Every PILLAR employee is responsible for the implementation of the Exposure Control Plan (ECP).  As specified in our exposure control plan, this position is classified as: Category 1.

 

Category 1

Employees who perform tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or other potentially infectious materials

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

New Jersey Department of Education Certification as Speech/Language Specialist or eligible for emergency certification. Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited university. Fingerprint examination, Approval of Fingerprinting, and Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC). If status is Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY), employee must obtain Certificate of Clinical Competence upon completion of the CFY.
